Achalasia Gone Prime Time!

I was watching Law and Order, Criminal Intent on Sunday night and was completely caught off guard when I suddenly heard the word "Achalasia".
A girl in her 20's was found dead in an alley-way. They suspected her of drug hoarding, but soon after the autopsy they discovered that she had achalasia and never could have swallowed a balloon filled with drugs.
They pronounced it differently than I have been saying it though. They said "Ack - alasia". I have been saying "Eh - calasia". That is how my doctor in Mississippi pronounced it, so that's how I've always said it. Lately, I've heard a few people here in New Orleans pronounce it "Ack - alasia" too. But now I can't actually recall how my new doctor in New Orleans pronounces it. So which way is the right way? How do you all pronounce it? I don't want to sound ignorant.
Anyway, I was still overly excited about our condition making it to Prime Time television! I hope you all can share in my excitement! I'm such a dork sometimes.

Sruka4,
It's great news to hear about your brother-in-law. How wonderful that they were able to contain it!
I'm sorry about your bad day. I have days like that. Sometimes you just want to wallow in your own sadness and lock yourself in your room. This week I've been kind of bad...as in I'm straying away from my liquid diet that I'm supposed to be on. It feels so good to eat the things you love even though you know you'll have to throw it up later. I find it makes me feel better.
Last night was strange. I had an urge to cook chicken cacciatore and I ate it too! Strangely enough, I never threw it up! I can't imagine how it went down, but it did! So, I pressed my luck as usual and had pork chops tonight and of course they came back up. Yesterday was a really good day though. I wasn't stressed at all, and I got a phone call about a resume I had submitted and got an interview for the next day. So I guess I was just at ease and my esophagus let up or something.
Today was not so good though. My nurse called me today to tell me that my pathology work came back today and they found yeast in my esophagus! Yeast! Isn't that lovely? So, I have to take Diflucan for 10 days. Nice.
I'm going tomorrow to meet with my surgeon, Dr. Richardson, to discuss having the Heller myotomy again. I hope it's sooner rather than later.
You should just go ahead and have the surgery. You can't possibly wait a few more months, let alone 2 years! Hopefully, your lawyer can win your case, but don't worry about it for now.
Please take care!
Hello. Fellow suffers!
Here on the west coast its pronounced ache-alasia.
I didnt see the law & Order episode you are talking about however this last season or the one before htere was a patient on "ER" that had Achalasia and so did his daughter. I was thrilled to see it being talked about.
My husband had dental surgery and has need to run everything thru the blender to eat. He now understands. He also had a hard time swallowing vitamins one day and said wow that must be what it is like for you to eat and I said you imagine it happens everytime you swallow or should I say try to swallow.
I feel for you both. After my 2 months of post dialation I am eating better just have to stay away from bread meat and raw veggies and really concentrate on chewing well. A sandwich would be heaven but it is a bad idea.
Take care!

That lets you hear how it's pronounced...
although most illness or dysfunctions which begin with a-
aseptic
apyrexial
aphasia
asymptomatic
are all pronounced as ay.
A-chalasia is inability to relax/loosen.
